cupola space, revolutionary spaces for extraordinary events and personal projects

the begining

cupola space has since 2022 revolutionized event space in mallorca through the development of its very own tectonic tent system called the tor+shell.

the tor+shell is a state-of-the-art tent, based on a prefabricated timber shell and tensioned membrane surface that generates the perfect context for a wide range of events and semi permanent activities.

the predominance of timber structure in the design, in combination with the graduated light of the membrane, and the extensive transparency, produces an immersive contact with the surrounding context, resulting in a sophisticated inside the outside experience.

the tor+shell cupola has evolved from the limitations of the geodesic dome that was its predecessor, offering an innovative solution for shade and shelter with guaranteed qualities for a wide range of applications.

tor+shell

the concept

the tor+shell is the product of years of experimentation in the world of geodesic and textile architectures and introduces a new standard to deployable spaces.

torshell_donut

(tor) the torus that forms its geometric dna is a surface of revolution defined by two circles. It has a long and a short axis, and generates spaces with sectional variation, which together with the open porticos framing memorable views, makes it the perfect space for events and other semi permanent activities.

(shells) tor+shells have an inherently structural shape, integrating sequences of timber beams that rotate effortlessly to form self supporting shells. they introducing a sense of stability to any gathering and their aerodynamic shape allows them to resist hurricane force winds.

surfaces

the idea

there are many options for covering the timber shell, each producing different ambient qualities, and they can be customized according to the event or the activity that is being accommodated.

the surfaces are made from high quality technical textiles that are cut into patterns and hi frequency welded into a made to measure skin. the quality of the interior light varies according to the textile that is selected, and can be specifically adapted to each case.

the surfaces are stable in uv and have a guarantee of 7 years but last twice as long without deterioration.

transparent films are often used in evening events to maximize the relationship with the surroundings, while for semi permanent installations ferrari membranes provide earthy tones in a matt finish that fit into rural contexts and generate a warm attractive light inside.

the information

conditioning

in normal summer conditions, the shade cover together with the cross ventilation of the spaces produces an ideal environment even on the hottest mediterranean days.

home

for evening events the transparent cover allows full immersion in the surroundings while providing protection from the chill of spring and autumn nights and any dew. when it is cold, wet, or excessively windy, transparent side and end panels can be installed to enclose and protect the space, allowing them to be heated either passively by solar radiation, or by the application of space heater.

assembly

tor+shells are assembled manually in a day. they can be directly placed on natural surfaces such as stone, earth or grass for an integrated feel. alternatively on inclined ground, they can be built on a levelled gravel platform or a rigid timber deck. the cupola is self supporting, but depending on the wind forecast, might require to be held down by water ballast for events, or in semi permanent installations by earth anchors.

code compliance

tor+shells are deployable, self-supporting, and do not require a foundation system. structurally they are designed to meet all the requirements of the european standard EN13782, specifically in terms of stability under wind loads. the membranes are fire retardant to M2, with anti UV finishes, generating a safe and healthy shade.
